Following the proceedings of the Supreme
Court of India, Gujarat set up a high level autonomous Authority for monitoring
the resettlement and rehabilitation
work undertaken in the state. The Gujarat
Government, through the resolution of
February
16, 1999, set up a body called the Grievances
Redressal Authority for Sardar Sarovar
Project Affected Persons (GRA).
The GRA was intended to be a forum for
grievance redressal for the project
affected persons who had resettled in
Gujarat. The Chairman of the Authority
is to be appointed in consultation with
the Chief Justice of India. Accordingly,
Justice P.D. Desai, Retired Chief Justice
of Bombay, Calcutta and Himachal Pradesh
High Courts was appointed as the Chairman.
The current chairman is Justice S.B.
Majmudar, Former Judge of Supreme Court
of India. The member is Justice
B.S. Kapadia, a Former High Court Judge. |

As the apex forum for grievance redressal,
the GRA interacts with individual PAPs/PAFs,
delegations of PAPs/PAFS, NGOs and voluntary
organizations. The forum gives the opportunity
to the oustees to voice their grievances
and highlight the problems faced by
them. Once the grievances are received,
they are referred to either GRC or SSNNL,
as the case may be. |
