Gujarat
to charge tourists for Narmada dam view
Indo-Asian News Service
Ahmedabad, July 18 (IANS) The Gujarat government has decided
to charge tourists for a view of a dam under construction
over the Narmada river.
From
Wednesday, people flocking to the controversial 110 m
dam and the reservoir near Kevadia village will be charged
Rs.5 each.
Parking
fees at the dam site, part of the ambitious, multipurpose
Narmada project, will range from Rs.10 to Rs.100.
The
project, the focus of an intense debate over the environmental
and human costs involved, is running behind schedule with
cases of resettlement and rehabilitation of the affected
population yet to be settled.
The
dam site has attracted a large number of tourists in recent
weeks following the onset of monsoons.
